Chapter 1

[One] Happy Birthday
Chapter One: Happy Birthday
Jung Jessica’s perspective

“Jessica” a sweet gentle voice called my name softly. Only one person in the world would wake me up as caring as this, as caring as a mother. I opened my eyes slowly, adjusting itself to the bright light coming from the window and my guessed was right. Though her image was blurred before my eyes fully opened. Her long dark brown straight hair was down to her waist. Her pale clear face was as always, pretty without makeup. Her soft brown yet dark eyes were constantly shining. She smiled warmly at me as her fingers brushed through my hair, sweeping it away from my face. She leaned closer to me and whispered something in a cheerful tone “Happy nineteenth birthday”

I smiled hearing her congratulated me and next she kissed my forehead as if I was a child. “Thank you SeulGi unnie” I thanked her as I rose from my sleeping position and rubbed my right eye, letting my blanket fell off my shoulders to my knees. She backed away from me so I had space to stretch myself.

“Your welcome Jessica and…” she paused trying to take out something from her pocket. It was a white envelope. “It’s from your parents and based on the stamp, they are currently in Paris”

I immediately took the letter away from her and tore the envelope apart. Inside there was a birthday card. It looked so cute too with a picture of a brown smiling teddy bear holding a delicious looking cake. I guessed the cake is strawberry because I absolutely love strawberry and it was pink with cute pink candles. There were also two heart shaped balloons beside the soft brown bear. The card has a pretty unique design. I could see why they chose this card. It even sparkled with its tiny soft looking glitters. After admiring the cover, I opened the card to read what they wrote. As usual, they apologized for not able to come back to Korea to celebrate my birthday. SeulGi unnie was right they are presently at Paris now. They also wrote that they bought me clothes from Paris; the clothes would be arriving sometime next week. After they wrote how sorry they are, they asked how YunHo is doing. Speaking of YunHo, where is he? “Unnie, where is YunHo oppa?”

“He’s at work. An employee called him this morning. It sounded urgent too” unnie answered. I was disappointed. My own brother didn’t wish me a happy birthday. Even if he is a pain but he is still the only one related to me that I have here. SeulGi unnie seemed to notice my sudden change of expression and tried comforting me by giving me a hug. I felt her soft hair brushed against my cheek as she cuddled me. This is why I love SeulGi unnie. She is so caring. I’m glad YunHo oppa let her stay with us.

“Omma. I’m hungry,” I pouted after SeulGi unnie broke the hug. I sometimes called SeulGi unnie ‘omma’ because she is so thoughtful like a mother. She giggled and stood up.

“Well get up and take a shower. Someone is already awake to make you a very special breakfast.” I thought she meant YunHo, but then again YunHo oppa is a horrible chief. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t want me to die on my birthday. After SeulGi unnie left my bedroom, I did my morning routine and walked to the kitchen. I was surprise to see my favorite breakfast on the table, eggs with a side of toast and chocolate brownies, along with a vase of white roses, my favorite flower.

“Happy birthday Jessica” I heard someone greeted me from behind. His unique deep charismatic voice made me smile. That person covered my eyes and wanted me to guess whom he was. I laughed hearing this, only one person in the world who has that captivating voice.

“My funny Mickey Mouse, Park YooChun” I easily answered. He let go of me and I turned back to kiss him. “You’re up early” I hugged him after we broke the kiss. He hugged me back and I saw SeulGi unnie from the corner of my eye. She was in the living room and she has a look on her face which mean don’t do anything over the line. She is as overprotective as YunHo is. At least they agreed on our relationship.

“I wanted to wish you a happy birthday” he released me and I saw his angelic smile. I stepped away from him just a little so I could see his whole face clearly. His hair was shining black with dark brown highlights, last time it was only black. His baby face’s features never fail to mesmerize me. He was too handsome to be human. “I also wanted to make you breakfast” did I mentioned his voice was too enchanting too?

“Thank you YooChun oppa” I’m so lucky to have him as a boyfriend. He is such a sweet caring person, unlike my brother that is. I’m really glad I met him at a flower shop last year. He was a flirt back then; it’s one of his charms. I really have found my true love. He watched me eating the breakfast he made himself. It was absolutely delicious, which pleased him. After breakfast, we stayed in the apartment; apparently it was YunHo’s order. SeulGi unnie has to go to work so she left early. She worked in the same café as YunHo oppa.

“Do you want your present baby?” YooChun asked me. I snuggled up to him and rest my head on his chest. I could smell his sweet scent. He was warm too. He hugged my shoulder and placed his head on mine, inhaling the fragrance of my hair. “You haven’t answer me”

“I thought I already got my present” I looked up at him and I saw him looking down at me with a cute confuse expression. I giggled at his adorable face and stroked it. “I already have you. It’s the only present I ever want. What else do I need?”

“You need a real present,” he stated. “Other than me.” he pushed me away gently as he reached for his bag. I watched him as took out a cutely wrapped box. It was a small pink box with glitters and ribbons all around it. He gave me the pink box and he had a grin on his face.

“What’s this?” I examined the box followed by shaking it but heard nothing. He looked at me amusedly. Then he whispered softly to me.

“Your present of course. Now open it,” he ordered. His large hands guided mine to open it. We untied the ribbons of the box together and inside there was a black and red necklace. It had two cute black and red stones shaped like Mickey Mouse. I laughed because the charm reminds me of him. It even sparkled in the sunlight, making small rainbows of it’s own. It must have cost a lot. He leaned closer to my ear and I could feel his warm breathes on my neck. “Do you like it?” his voice was full of hope and concern.

“YooChun, this must be expensive” my hands continued to caress the mouse charm, watching the small rainbows around it. “You don’t have to spend on me. I’m happy that you are here with me” I could feel his muscular arms tighten around me.

“I know but I want to spend on you. I want to spoil you, like YunHo and SeulGi do.” Then he kissed my hair and embraced me more than ever. I shook my head in disapproval. I do know how he felt. I wanted to do the same to him but I know he would not like it if I do spend money on him. I moved up to his face and gave him a kiss.

“Well since you already bought this, thank you” he smiled as I said those words. I cuddled toward him again and tried to enjoy his existence. I wanted to remember how warm he was. How he sweet he smelt. How he cherished me with his huge muscular arms. I could forever stay like this, just as long he stay beside me. I don’t know how long we’ve been in that position but we came back to reality when YooChun’s phone rang.

“Hello? Oh it’s you. Ok…ok… fine, we’ll be there in a few minutes. See you later” then he hanged up and grinned at me. I’ve known him for a year now and that grin meant he had something planned.

“What was that all about?” I demanded for an explanation. I eyed him suspiciously but he kept the same grin on his face. I hate it when he is like this. I folded my arms on my chest, waiting.

“Time for your second birthday present” his grin got wider afterward he stood up. He walked towards the coat closet and took out both of our jackets. “Come on. We don’t want to be late”

I sat still on the sofa. What is he up to? I don’t like it. He looked at me and sighed. He must have noticed my stubbornness. He walked over in front of me next crouched down and held my hands. We stared at each other for a few seconds. His eyes looked like they were begging for me to cooperate. “Where are we going?” He let out a sighed of annoyance.

“If I tell you then it won’t be a surprise. Someone will kill me if I tell you” he explained. He was practically pleading.

“Who do you mean when you said ‘someone’? Did you mean YunHo?” it must be YunHo. Who else wants to kill YooChun, my boyfriend?

“Jessica~” YooChun whined. He pouted afterwards. His pout was too adorable for words. I looked away from him in order not to fall into his trap. “Please be a good girl and do whatever I say. Just for today”

“But today is my birthday. Shouldn’t I get what I want?”
“Then what do you want?”
“An explanation”
“Other than that”
“Nothing else but a clarification”

“Fun killer” he mumbled but I did hear him. I shot deadly glares at him. He then held my hands tighter. “Look Jessica, please cooperate. We are going to be late. You’ll fine out later anyway” he enlightened me. He is right though. I was still for a second, thinking. He looked restless waiting for me.

“Fine” I gave in. He smiled upon hearing my answer and embraced me. I heard him thanked me for cooperating. The next thing I know was I was in his car. He was driving carefully, listening to some music on the radio. It was almost dark and the lights on the street began to light up. The lights made YooChun somewhat glowed. I stared at him in awed. He really is an angel, my angel and no one else’s. He can prove that himself, though not the angel part but the part where he belonged to me.

“Jessica?” his velvet voice woke me up from my thoughts. I immediately felt slightly hot on my cheeks. I heard him chuckle as he stared up a head. “Were you thinking about me?” ok, now my face is burning. I shook my head and tried to hide my red face. I decided to look out of the window. I heard him chuckled. I’m glad he is enjoying himself. The lights on the streets were brightly lit and I saw a few cars on the road. The sights of passing buildings with neon lights were astounding. After a few minutes, I felt the car stopped. It seemed that we are at a traffic light. Then without warning, YooChun leaned closer to me and gave me a light kiss. I stared at him with shock. He still had the same smirk on his striking baby face.

“Did I make you blush?” he asked, still smirking. I can feel my face burning hot. I looked up front and the lights were almost turning green.

“Green light” I told him to drive so I wouldn’t have to answer. Though he did make me blushed. No matter what how many times he kisses me or even just touches me, he always makes my cheeks redden and my heart accelerates. Only he can make me feel this way. My gaze returned to the window and I was surprise to see a truck heading right towards us. Fast and without warning…

… It collided with us.

“Jessica, I love you” was all I could hear before I fell into the darkness.

Chapter 2

[Two] Past
Chapter Two: Past
Jung YunHo’s perspective

“Where are they? They should be here an hour ago.” I complained as I walked back forth. I keep on looking at my watch. They are very late. Where are they?

“YunHo, just be patient. You know Jessica is hard to convince. It’ll take time to persuade her, even if it’s YooChun.” SeulGi tried to calm me down. True, living under the same roof as Jessica for nineteen years, Jessica is very hard to influence.

“Fine but it’s an hour already!” I semi shouted. Seriously, I’ve been preparing all morning for her surprise birthday party. The cake is ready. The balloons are already hanged. The decorations are perfect. Her presents are safely hidden. The sound system is already playing her favorite songs. Thank goodness I didn’t invite any of her friends or they will be waiting. I’ve done everything I could. YooChun’s job is tried to make her busy all day after that come here to dad’s hotel to officially celebrate. I saw SeulGi twisting her fingers and her eyes were down. I have known for a fact that she is thinking right now.

“You’re right, they are late. Maybe something happened.” she was worried now. I was frustrated. I sat beside SeulGi and tried comforting her by softly patting her back.

“Everything is going to be fine SeulGi. You worried too much. They are just late, which is driving me crazy!” I heard her giggled. I looked down at her and she was laughing at me. I made a face at her.

“Thank you for trying to cheer me up.” she looked at her watch and sighed. “I wonder where they are? I hope they are safe.”

I continued to gaze at SeulGi. She was a very considerate person. She is sometime like an omma to Jessica. She always helped Jessica with ‘girl problem’. I can’t help Jessica with that considering I’m a guy. I do not know what I’ll do without her. She was always there to comfort me whenever I was stress. She also does most of the cooking, which help Jessica form getting food poison by my cooking. I’m glad I let her live with Jessica and me. I met SeulGi three years ago in a hospital nearby. I went there for my regular check ups while Jessica was in school.

Flash Back

The hospital was as busy as always, doctors walking in high speed, nurses gossiping, patients complaining, children screamed in fear. Yet my mind focused on one girl in particular. I saw her all alone in the corner with her head hung low. Her fingers were twisting with one another. I approached her and sat next to her. I smelt a scent of strawberry from her that made me smiled. I suddenly have a craving for strawberry. I tried greeted her with my ‘angel’ smile. Instead of receiving a glared from her like I predicted, she showed me a sweet smile. I could tell from her rosy face she has been crying. I asked her why was she all alone.

“I lost my family.” her voice was soft like it’s going to break yet, I can tell she is trying her best not to cry again. Her eyes were watery and red. She has a face of a doll with her pale skin and her cheeks were flushed from all the crying. Her lashes were long, black and curly. “They all drowned but I was the only one who survived.”

Her charming face and great self-control interests me. “I’m Jung YunHo, what is your name?” I introduced myself. I wanted to know more about her. She has some kind of aura that made you want to know her, to lure you in her bright shiny eyes, to take care of her. She looked at me for a long time before answering my question.

“SeulGi, Bae SeulGi.” her soft answering voice rings in my ears. How does she do that? She reminds me so much of a doll, a pretty doll with long smooth straight hair and long lashes shadowing her dazzlingly glistening eyes. Her lips were perfectly pale red and soft, a beautiful doll indeed. Her eyes moved down to the floor again. I wanted to start a conversation but I heard a faint calling.

“Jung YunHo? Jung YunHo?” I immediately looked around searching for who called my name. It was a nurse, I immediately say goodbye to SeulGi and walked toward the nurse. I apologized for not realizing she named me. At first she glared at me but as soon as I flashed a smile, the nurse blushed and her glare turned into flirty eyes. As she guided me to see Mr. Lee, I glanced back at SeulGi only to see her waving innocently at me with a doll like beam. My gaze turned back to the front and unknowing my lips curled into a smile. Amazingly, I made a conclusion not only she has the face of a pretty doll, great willpower and a special charm of her own, she also has the power to make people smile. That interests me even more.

“YunHo, long time no see. Are you beginning to feel lazy to visit me?” I looked straight a head and realized I’ve arrived at Lee SooMan’s office. Wow, was I deep in thoughts? I gave uncle Lee a polite smile before I took a sit in front of uncle’s desk and greeted him. As usual his desk was a mess with papers, files and pens everywhere. How does this man get to be a doctor? He is barely organized. “Shall we begin?” my sight moved from his cluttered desk to his semi-wrinkled face. I nodded at his question and then we began my regular checks up. Lee SooMan is my father’s best friend and also our family’s doctor. Jessica and I supposed to call him uncle instead of doctor. First he checked my blood pressure. “So how’s the family? Is Jessica fine?” he asked me as he wrote something down. I shrugged at his question and looked outside his window. His office is on the seventh floor. It has a great view of the nearby park. The park was full of people from this hospital.

“I have no idea how are my parents, they are still in America. Jessica is fine though.” I answered bluntly. Uncle wrote something down again after he checked my temperature.

“Yes, I heard you moved out from the mansion with Jessica. YunHo, you are only nineteen and Jessica is only sixteen, you shouldn’t let her moved out with you. How are you going to feed her? Give her lunch money? Take care of her health? Hand please.” he requested for my hand as he lectured me. I rolled my eyes and sighed.

“It’s Jessica’s decision, she wanted to leave that empty mansion. About feeding her, money and health, I can do those things.” I gave my hand to him as he measured the rate of my heart. I move out from that deserted mansion because it’s felt too lonely, too big, and too luxurious. Mom and dad are always overseas leaving only Jessica and me. I understand they wanted to make money to provide the two of us with everything but all Jessica and I ever wanted was a family. We both wanted to be a family that always comes home to eat dinner together, to spend time with each other. Uncle wrote something down again and returned to his sit. I sat down too and watched him putting on his glasses.

“I understand YunHo, I’m just saying you are too young. I’m just worried about Jessica. I also heard you refuses to spend money that your parents gave you. You rented an apartment by using your owned money. I’m impressed to hear that. Where exactly do you work to earn that kind of money to pay the rent despite your young age?” uncle’s compliment flattered me. I grinned at him and answered with my head held high.

“Ever since I turned sixteen, I worked at a café without my parents knowing. I’ve been working there for roughly three years now and I’ve been promoted. I currently owned that café. Right after my nineteenth birthday, I managed to find a nice apartment near my work place and next you know the rest of the story. I moved out.” I told my story to uncle who looked at me with great contentment. It wasn’t easy working at the café. My boss was like a slave driver.

“Your father must be proud of you YunHo.” he smiled at me. I don’t know how to respond to that, as I haven’t seen my dad for about four months now since my birthday. “Anyway, you are in perfect shape. Have you been working out? Because your muscles are bigger than last time”

“I’ve been working overtime at the café. Drop by sometimes uncle.” I recommended my café to him as he laughed. As I bid my goodbye, I remembered SeulGi’s doll like face. “Uncle, do you know Bae SeulGi?” uncle’s eyes stared at me. He set his spectacles down.

“Yes, she is one of my patients.” uncle looked at me with curiosity. I grinned as I obtained this information. “Why do you ask?” his eyes were locked to mine.

“Does she have a place to live? Despite her whole family is gone, and don’t ask me how I know all this.” I replied as uncle looked into his folders. He checked them page-by-page. I was standing near the door, waiting.

“According to her patient’s profile, she would be living with her grandparents. However, I heard they dislike children; imagine a teenager living with them. She is your age YunHo.” uncle explained without looking up from the papers.

Suddenly a crazy idea came to my head “Hey uncle, she is a legal adult right? Meaning she can choose her own decision?” uncle looked up to meet my smirk. He had a suspicious look on his face. He set the folder down on his untidy desk.

“Yes, she is nineteen. So?” his eyes were dying to know what I was thinking. My smirk got bigger. I said he’d be seeing her in a few minutes, with that I left uncle’s office as he yelled my name. I searched for SeulGi as I got out. She was still in the corner where I last saw her, still looking like as lovely as a doll. I approached her and sat down next to her. Her round shimmering eyes met mine. She asked me if I left something behind. Her soprano voice still rings in my ears. I merely shook my head and smiled.

“Why are you still here?” I asked in low voice almost like a whisper. I have to manipulate her for one second. Control your eagerness YunHo. Talk slowly. She asked me back by what do I mean. Her eyes were still gazing at my face. She tilted her head to the side and her hair swayed according to her movement. “Why aren’t you going home?” I made sure my voice was still low. She answered a simple ‘o’ before looking down, breaking her gaze.

“My grandparents’ house is not my home. A home is where the people you love is and the people love you back. My grandparents hate me.” her eyes stayed on the floor as her fingers twist among each other. Her eyes searched for mine as soon as I asked where she would go. Yes I got her where I wanted her. My lips almost formed a smile but her doll like face stopped me. Her expression showed nothing but pure grief. I felt bad doing this but it would benefit her as well. She answered in an alto tone, a lower but soft tone that she doesn’t know where to go. This was the chance I’ve been waiting for. I held out my hand slowly. She looked at it with a confuse face. I watched her pale face intently. This is it. I took a deep breath before slowly exhaling it.

“Come with me. I’ll take care of you.” I made sure my tenor voice was firm and gentle. Inside I was praying she would take my hand. Her gleaming eyes moved from my hand to my stare. Our gaze locked at each other as I waited for her answer. She broke our gaze and watched my hand attentively. Hesitantly, she reached out for it. As soon as her hand touched mine, my lips curled up into a smile. I saw her face beaming as well. I could feel her hand trembling on mine. I held it tight. “You need to tell your doctor where you are going to live from now on.” She laughed after I said those words. I didn’t ask her why after that. The reasons why she agreed to come with me and for her gentle laughter.

End of Flash Back

That is how I managed to gain SeulGi’s trust. She said a home is where the people you love is and the people love you back. I proudly admitted that I care for her, goes the same for Jessica. The two of us really glad that we met her, she was thoughtful and really helpful when it comes to house chores. I’m always busy running the café while Jessica studies. She is like an angel truthfully. Constantly helping with a tender smile.

“YunHo?” a soprano voice called my name. Was I deep in thoughts again? I looked at SeulGi and saw she was holding her phone to her ear. She also had a cheerless expression on her doll like face. Her eyes turned glossy like the first time I met her. I asked her what is wrong. “The hospital call, Jessica and YooChun are…”

My eyes widen on that fateful fact.

Chapter 3

[Three] Good bye
Chapter Three: Good bye
Jung Jessica’s perspective

My mind regained its awareness with a pain on my upper body. I groaned softly as I felt the pain slowly devoured me. My surrounding felt cold too. I was shaking. I sensed something heavy yet soft and warm on top of me. Where am I? Why am I here? How do I get here? Where is YooChun? Abruptly I remembered what happened. A truck, yes, a huge truck hit us. And…

YooChun shielded me.

I felt my chest pounding with the accelerating beat of my heart. I felt pain on my left chest. I could feel my tears were accumulating. My heart and mind refused to accept the fact YooChun was…. He jumped in front of me, shielding me from the hit. Where is he? I needed to see him. I needed to see he is all right. I opened my eyes slowly as the bright light entered my wet eyes. I could see a white blurry ceiling. I was familiar with that white ceiling when everything in my sight was clear. It was where YunHo oppa always brought me if I had food poison. The square patterns on the ceiling were all I could see.

“Jessica?” I heard a female voice called my name with concern. I looked to my side and saw SeulGi unnie. Her usual sparkle eyes were red and damp. Her red cheeks had two trails of tears falling from each of her eyes. Even her nose was pinkish red. Seeing unnie like this made me want to comfort her. I tried to move but the pain on my body stopped me. I groaned quietly again. I noticed my right hand had a needle penetrating my skin to let blood flow into my vein. It was connected to a bag of red blood attached to a tall standing metal rod. SeulGi held my left hand and looked at me with full of happiness. Her face beamed as she held tighter and tighter. Without warning, she hugged me.

“Thank goodness you are fine.” I heard her sobs as she whispered softly into my ears. I felt my shoulder damp where she had buried her head. She patted my head softly and embraced me tighter. “Thank goodness.” She kept on mumbling.

“SeulGi unnie.” I called out. My voice sounded tired and has a hint of emotionless. I needed to ask her where YooChun was. However she still won’t let go. Therefore I asked her right then. “Unnie, where’s YooChun?”

Abruptly, SeulGi rose up away from me. Her expression showed mixed emotions. She closed her eyes and once again embraced me. “He is…” her voice hesitated to tell me. She let out a sighed and let go of me. She stared at me while her hands cupped my face. Her tears were still flowing rapidly from her eyes. Her pale pink lips were trembling. She looked like she was trying to say something but kept changing her mind about it. However finally she said in a depressing tone. “Just rest Jessica.”

SeulGi unnie knew I was stubborn. Why isn’t she giving me the answer? “Unnie, where is YooChun?” She bit her bottom lips. It was like she given orders not to tell me. This was making me more anxious. I wanted to stand up and search for him. “Unnie.” I begged. My voice felt like it’s going to break. My eyes were wet again. “Please, where is YooChun? Where is he unnie?”

“Sica…” her hand stroked my face as her eyes looked directly in mine. It was still glittering and full of tears. Every time she called me ‘Sica’ it usually mean she doesn’t want to go further. “YooChun…YooChun is…”

Out of the blue, YunHo oppa came in. In his hands were multiple colored plastics. His facial feature turned from shock to relief as he saw me. His hands were shaky and the rainbow like plastics fell from his arms. He kept the same relief face as he approached me and hugged me. I felt his hair on my cheeks as he embraced me.

“Oppa, where is YooChun? Is he all right?” I asked but instead of giving me the answer. He held me tighter. I felt my shoulder soaked and heard his soft sobbing. Was he crying? YunHo oppa? YunHo oppa is crying?

“YooChun’s injuries were…” I heard SeulGi explaining. She tried to find a suitable word to use. My eyes widen as the possibilities rushed in my head. I knew what she meant. No wonder she couldn’t answer. My heart couldn’t bear it anymore. I couldn’t think any longer. My mind was in a mess. All I could remember was the memories of YooChun’s smile. All of the memories, sweet ones and bitter ones.

“Be strong Jessica” I heard YunHo’s small deep breaking voice. I can barely hear him with the new and sudden pain in my heart. “I know it’s hard. Just be strong.” I felt his lips touched my forehead. I was weeping as the pain consumed me. SeulGi patted my head softly as her tears once again flow down. I felt like I couldn’t move anymore. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t even breathe. I felt like dying.

YooChun… please don’t do this to me…please.

Chapter 5

[Four] Decision
Chapter Four: Decision
Jung YunHo’s perspective

Jessica was sleeping on her hospital bed with tears stains on her glossy face. SeulGi slept on the chair with her head rested on the bed. Her hand held tight on Jessica’s uninjured hand. I sighed as I looked at my watched. It was two in the morning and I could not sleep. I drank too much coffee today. Today was supposed to be a blissful day, not…

Not anything like this.

I let out another sighed and decided to go out from the room. Maybe a walk would calm me down. I got up softly, not wanting to wake up the girls and opened the door. To my surprise, a doctor was standing in front of me; the long white cloth defined him as a doctor. He wore a pair of spectacles and looked too young to be a doctor. However he appeared to be professional. His hair was wood brown and short. He also has female facial features; I almost thought he was a woman but his tenor voice defined him as a man.

“Jung YunHo?” He immediately asked. His low tenor voice was almost a whispered. I glanced back at the room and saw the girls still sleeping silently. I quietly stepped outside and carefully closed the door. Finally I answered the doctor’s question by nodding. He looked relief after that. “I needed to talk to you sir. Please come to my office.” He requested and led the way. I followed him through the empty corridors. The hospital’s hallways were brightly lighted with only a few nurses around. I could only hear footsteps along the way and some soft whisperings. During the day, the hall would be packed with patients, complaints, crying and screaming of children. It’s now strange to see such a deserted place. As soon as we arrived at the doctor’s office, he walked calmly to his very tidy desk and held a folder. He gestured to a wooden chair in front of his timber desk.

“Why did you ask me to be here doctor?” I sat down on the chair as I waited for his answer. His office was unlike uncle Lee’s office, it was very tidy and organized, the complete opposite. The dark brown wood like color gave the office a warm feeling; almost every furniture is made from wood. It was rather dim since the only light switched on was on his desk. The window behind the young man was huge and the curtains were drawn away from each other; I could see the stars high above, sparkling. My eyes continued to examine, I made a conclusion he is fond of books since his wooden selves were full of thick complicated books.

“Do you know Park YooChun?” He pushed his glasses up. I gulped and nodded. This doctor seemed to have an aura that scared me. Or maybe it was just because I started to feel sleepy. “Are you aware of the fact that his parents are both dead?” That made me somewhat shock but I remembered a faint image of which Jessica telling me that YooChun lived with his aunt. That could be a clue. I nodded as a respond.

“Why are you asking me all of these?” I eyed him suspiciously. He smiled at me, which made me feel nervous more than ever. Usually I’m the one who manipulates people. Now I know how SeulGi and uncle Lee feels.

“I need your permission Mr. Jung to save someone. You see, since Park YooChun’s parents both passed away I need a signature to remove his heart,” his explanation puzzled me. I think he noticed that my right eyebrow rose in confusion. He let out a sighed as he continued to explain. “Since you are a close friend of Mr. Park, I need your permission to do the operation.” I almost laugh at that statement. Close friend? I’m more like his brother in law. I processed every single word that came out from him and tried to make sense out of it.

“You mean a heart transplant?” I asked again. His smile never left his female like face. He nodded as a replied. His expression seemed relief now that I understood him. “And you need my signature to approve this operation?”

“Yes,” he began as his smile widen. “This person really need a new heart and he could die without the transplant.” All of the sudden the smile disappeared as soon as he mention the patient. I made another conclusion this ‘patient’ is someone who is precious to him. I thought about it. I could save this person and the people around him would be happy… Or I just let that person die and grief would overcome his or her cherished ones, just like what happened to Jessica. I could not imagine the pain anymore. How Jessica suffered. How that made both SeulGi and I suffered as well.

“Where do I sign?” The doctor beamed as soon as I agree. He rushed to find the documents and handed me a pen. He kept on thanking me and how grateful he was. “Do you know this patient? You seem attached to him or her.” I signed the documents as I looked at the young doctor.

“He is like a little brother to me. I met him when I visited my dying uncle in this very hospital. The patient was born with a heart disease and rarely stayed away from his room. He is the reason why I became a doctor. I wanted to save him so he can finally leave this place.” He gazed into space as he told me. I asked who was the patient. He smiled again and led me to this person. In truth it felt really weird to walk down the silent hallway. I noticed the nurses greeted the doctor with faint red cheeks. Looks like he is popular with the females. Though he is shorter than me just by a few centimeters and he looks feminine; he is handsome in a way. Finally we stepped into the intently care room and I saw a young man, about YooChun’s age and he was sleeping soundlessly. His body has tubes and wires everywhere. He was pale as the sheet. I never saw anybody like as sick as him. “His name is Kim KiBum. I’m LeeTeuk by the way but everyone calls me Eeteuk.” I continued to stare at this KiBum. I don’t why but he kind of reminds me of YooChun. He has a baby like face. Jessica’s type of man always has that baby face whenever he smiles. I wonder if…

“Eeteukie,” I heard a girl’s soft voice from behind us. I stopped my thought right then and turned around, only to see a cute innocent looking girl with soft black curled hair carrying a white cup. Her face was so innocent and pale but her greeting smile was pure and gentle. From the corner of my eye I saw Eeteuk smiling.

“YooNa, good morning.” Eeteuk greeted the girl. “I thought you already left since KiBum is asleep.”

The girl shook her head lightly and smiled sweetly. “I’m staying till morning since I don’t have any classes tomorrow.” Her eyes next moved toward me and she beamed again. Her gaze afterward moved back to Eeteuk. I noticed her hair swayed at her every movement; her hair must be soft. “Have a good morning sleep Eeteukie oppa. You looked awfully tired. Be sure to sleep in a right position if you don’t want any aches the next time you wake up.”

Eeteuk chuckled at her. “Thank you for reminding me YooNa. I’ll remember.”

“Then, goodbye.” With that she smiled again and went passed Eeteuk. I glanced down at her as she passed by me. She has a sweet scent, not like SeulGi though. Her scent was like peach rather than strawberry. She sat beside KiBum’s bed and placed her white cup on the bedside table. Her stare at him was a caring one. It reminds me of someone or rather a couple.

“She’s KiBum girlfriend,” Eeteuk interrupted me. Forget about what I thought just minutes ago. It’ll never work now. I only nodded as I watched YooNa holding KiBum’s hand. She was a very cute girl. SeulGi is pretty but YooNa is cute. SeulGi just looked like a pretty doll but YooNa seemed to be more than that, she giving the impression of life. Almost like she will never sit still like a doll, unlike SeulGi. Most of the time SeulGi just stayed still and quiet. YooNa looked upbeat and cheerful.

“Doctor Eeteuk? We need you at room 107.” I turned around as soon I heard another female voice. A white uniformed lady probably older than me about five years was carrying a brown clipboard, standing talking to Eeteuk. Afterward Eeteuk face me with a smile. His smile is creepy. I think it’s because it’s two thirty in the morning and I’m a bit sleepy.

“Excuse me Mr. Jung but I have to go to work. I trust you can find your way back to your sister’s room?” He asked. I just nodded and he left with the nurse. I turned back to KiBum and YooNa, to my surprise the both of them are talking. YooNa’s smile at him was full of cuteness and happiness. KiBum just looked plain tired. However after a while I saw his lips curled up. Now I remember what it reminds me of. This reminds me of Jessica and YooChun. However the both of them rarely talk to each other, as they become closer and closer. They just hold each other tightly and smile at one another. Almost like they are one and can understand each other without talking. YooChun, why did you have to leave? I let out a sigh and looked down at my white shoes. I should go back now before SeulGi wakes up. As I turned my back on the couple, I saw a doll like girl standing on front of me. Her eyes were damp and glittering, the same goes for her cheeks, damp and flushed. Her dark brown hair was tied up in a messy ponytail.

It was SeulGi.

“What are you doing here?” I asked her. I could feel my eyes widen seeing her. I noticed she bit her bottom lip. She only does that when she is mad. I don’t feel so good, my instinct is telling me to run away. My eyes traveled down to her hands, it was forming a fist. My legs are shaking now. SeulGi may look harmless but she is mad, run like there is no tomorrow. Afterward her head descended down as her fist became more pronounced.

“How could you?” I heard a faint cry from her. Her head was still down making it difficult for me to tell whether she was crying or not due to her hair hovering her still moist rosy cheeks. I was confused of course, what is she talking about? “How could you? It is YooChun’s heart”

“Who told you?” That was all I could say before her. SeulGi’s shoulders were shaking. This made me walked up to her and embraced her. I could feel her tears staining my shirt, wetting it. “I want to do it.” I answered calmly. I felt her hands hitting my chest gently, she was still sobbing. I figure I should explain now. “SeulGi…” I pushed her away gently so I could see her face. Her face was glowing and wet like before. Her eyes were so red it scared me. I really should go to sleep. She was still biting her lower lip as I continued to stare at her. I smiled to ease her after that I face her to the couple. I looked at her expression and saw she was blank.

“Who are those people?” I heard her faint voice said. I looked at both KiBum and YooNa who were now staring at each other, holding hands. It reminds me so much of Jessica and YooChun.

I answered SeulGi without looking at her. “His name is KiBum and he was born with a heart disease,” I began. Afterward my gaze focused on YooNa. She was still smiling so innocently at him. “He’ll die if there is no replacement for his heart.”

“So you…” From the corner of my eye, I saw SeulGi turning to face me. Her eyes were still crimson like her damp cheeks.

“Her name is YooNa. I think she’ll die too if KiBum depart. She will die like Jessica.” I heard SeulGi gasped. I flinched thinking how badly hurt Jessica is. However I must convince SeulGi to let me do this. I let my words sink into her in a whisper, hiding all of my fear and let her agree with me. “Just like Jessica.”

“YunHo…” Her voice was shaking. She was shaking. I could feel her shoulders vibrating underneath my palms as I tried to calm her down by patting her softly. It didn’t work though. Her eyes were on the silent couple and stayed there for some time. I think she see what I see now. The image of YooChun and Jessica together, appeared so happy then…

…Shattered.

“So do you know why I did it?” It took a while for her to replied but she nodded as respond. I don’t want to see a dying soul in a cheerful person ever again. I bet SeulGi wished for the same thing. We both already saw it once, in front of our own eyes. “We should get back. Jessica might wake up.” SeulGi just continued nodding. The two of us finally left and along the way I just can’t help thinking about YooNa if KiBum left her. She looked really blissful with him.

I wonder if I did the right thing for the two of them…
